How long to keep your records: the six-year rule
s.31 of the Act says books must be kept for six years. What that covers, and what BizBrada keeps for you.
The rule
Books of account must be kept for at least six years after the year of assessment they relate to (s.31(6)).
So in 2026 you should still be able to produce 2020 onwards. Older than that, you may put away.
What counts as books
Sales and expense records, invoices issued and received, receipts, bank statements, and the payroll behind staff tax.
A photo of a receipt counts, as long as the figures on it can be read.
What we keep for you
Every record you enter stays in your books until you delete it — we never age anything out.
Receipt images you attach are stored with the record. Filed returns are frozen exactly as certified, with their reference.
You can export any range to CSV or Excel at any time, so your six years are never locked inside one app.
If you cannot produce them
A company that cannot produce its books is charged ₦50,000; any other business, ₦10,000 (s.102).
Keeping records in the app as you go is the whole point — by the time anyone asks, the answer is already there.
